Solomon Projects is pleased to announce The 2nd
of November, by young Athens, Georgia-based conceptual artist,
Kathryn Refi. This exhibition premieres Refi's most recent project
involving research of events that took place on the day of her
birth in 1975. The 2nd of November will be on view November
2 - December 23, 2010. Please join us for the opening reception
and birthday party on Tuesday, November 2nd from 6-8 PM.
By selecting the day of her birth as the control factor in this
project, the drawings in this exhibition present a range of
simultaneous events. The grand and the commonplace are granted
equal importance in the choice of images presented. Can it possible
that events of the day of our birth have cosmic significance
in our lives? Can they provide a link to who we are as individuals?
The 2nd of November continues Refi's interest in exploring information
communicated through news media, and follows her acclaimed 2008
gallery exhibition, All Things Considered, which mapped news
coverage of the National Public Radio's news program of the
same name.
The exhibition The 2nd of November will present two corresponding
bodies of work, each based on photographic archival material
researched at the University of Georgia Libraries from both
US and international magazines and newspapers. In the main gallery
Refi selected eight subjects from her research to render in
large format drawings in charcoal and pastel. Each drawing's
title is drawn from the original caption of the photo: Prince
Juan Carlos of Spain Meets with Residents of the Disputed Territory
Spanish Sahara; Loretta Lynn and her Friends Gather Backstage
at the Miami Beach Convention Center; President Gerald Ford
Greets Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in Florida; Muslim Fighters
Clash with Christian Militias in Beirut, Lebanon; Film Director
Pier Paolo Pasolini is Murdered; O.J. Simpson, of the Buffalo
Bills, Tries to Score; Chris Holl Poses with Dr. Lewis' Lamborghini
Miura; and Kathryn Refi is Born. The relating project, My Solution
to the November 2nd New York Times Crossword Puzzle will be
shown in the front gallery. Crossword Puzzle is a series of
thirty-four graphite on paper drawings, each 12 x 10 inches.
The drawings are Refi's solutions to each of the last thirty-four
crossword puzzles published by The New York Times on November
2nd, with the exception of 1978 when there was no newspaper
due to a printer's strike.
Born in Atlanta in 1975, Refi received her BFA from the Maryland
Institute, College of Art, in Baltimore, and her MFA from the
University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, where she currently
lives and works. She was honored this year with an early career,
major solo exhibition entitled Records at the Indianapolis Museum
of Contemporary Art (iMOCA), Indianapolis, IN and was featured
in two group exhibitions in 2009: Free Press in Free Fall, ATHICA
- Athens Institute for Contemporary Art, Athens, GA and Re(Search):
Exploring the Relationship Between Art & Science, The University
Art Gallery, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN. Her
work has been exhibited in museums around the southeast, namely
the Gibbes Museum, Charleston, SC; the Columbus Museum of Art,
Columbus, GA; Florida Atlantic University Art Galleries, Boca
Raton, FL; The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Atlanta, GA;
MOCA GA, Atlanta, GA, and nationally reviewed in Art in America
and Art Papers. This is the artist's third solo exhibition at
the gallery following All Things Considered in 2008.
