Something along the lines of Rock 'n' Roll
Solomon Projects juxtaposes five artists whose works embody an energetic and uncompromising spirit. Playful and serious, raw and baroque, elegant and minimalist, sophisticated and crude, Karen Rich Beall, Carter Kustera, Amy Landesberg, Joseph Peragine and Amy Pleasant share a willingness to take chances and to go out on a limb, to challenge and subvert our expectations of what art is, and how it can be experienced. Something along the lines of Rock 'n' Roll re-examines the gallery's 1996 exhibition Rock and Roll which art critic Jerry Cullum described as, "Witty Pop Culture Meditations." Over a decade and a half later, Rock-n-Roll remains an important cultural reference and sets the tone for this show. Something Along the Lines of Rock'n'Roll will be on view March 18th - April 23rd, 2011. An opening with the artists will take place on Friday, March 18th from 6 - 8 PM. T-shirts designed by gallery artist Scott Ingram will be for sale. Carter Kustera, whose irreverent attitude and hilarious sense of humor were central in the 1996 exhibition, returns with his edgy, urbane silhouette drawings reworked especially for the theme of this show. Instead of his signature portraits of people, he will create a new series, personalizing objects representing the culture of Rock'n'Roll. Karen Rich Beall stylizes animal and plant forms into fantastic sculptural hybrids, using unexpected and unconventional art materials such a felted wool and silicone. Her forms embody themes such as attraction and repulsion, life and death, host and parasite, and sexuality. Amy Landesberg's vibrant photographic film on plastic laminate installation entitled Rosewood Swag will cascade off the front gallery windows, spilling Pop-inspired colors onto to the walls and concrete floor. As a counterpoint, Amy Pleasant paints understated, ethereal white images directly on the walls, the compositions revealed by the ambient light and personal perspectives experienced. Joseph Peragine will transplant his studio into the white cube of the gallery via a baroque wall installation of dozens of new drawings, paintings, video and sculpture featuring characters from Peragine's cautionary tales from Hells on Wheels, Small Deaths, Bedtime Stories, Brute Neigbhors and Nature Porn. Karen Rich Beall has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the country, including solo exhibitions Fruit of Long Experience, Susquehanna Museum of Art, Harrisburg, PA (2009); Natural Phenomena, Philadelphia International Airport, Philadelphia, PA (2007). Karen Rich Beall received her MFA from the University of Tennessee and her BFA from the University of Florida. She lives and works in Lebanon, PA. Carter Kustera’s work has been selected for many influential international exhibitions including the 1993 and 1997 Venice Biennales; shown at the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; P.S. 1, Long Island City, NY; and the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, Greensboro, NC. Kustera lives and works in New York, NY. A major art wall project of Amy Landesberg's veneers will be featured in the expansion of Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, slated to open Fall 2011. This is her first sculptural presentation at the gallery and follows her lecture during the gallery's 2007 exhibition and lecture series, Wandern. Landesberg received a Master of Architecture, Yale School of Architecture, New Haven, CT; Master of Visual Arts, Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA and BA, University of New Hampshire. She is the founder and principal of Amy Landesberg Architects, Atlanta. Joseph Peragine will be featured in a Fall 2011 exhibition at the Global Health Odyssey Museum at the Centers of Disease Control, Atlanta; and last year was selected by The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center to create a limited edition print based on his series Etc. 2008 Peragine's short animated film, Rising Water, was selected for screening at Hollywood Freewaves festival of experimental media arts. Joseph Peragine received an MFA in 1995 from Georgia State University and a BFA in 1983 from the University of Georgia. Amy Pleasant has held recent solo exhibitions at The Birmingham Museum of Art, The Contemporary, Atlanta, GA; Rhodes College, Memphis, TN; and the University of Alabama, Birmingham, AL and a 2010-2011 artist residency at Coleman Center for the Arts, York, AL. Amy Pleasant received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA.
