Small Paintings is a
series that embraces Coulis's faculty for producing contemplations
of imagined and dreamlike moments. With her previous work featuring
figures, the new series serves as a shift in subject matter, as
they are all still-lifes. Influenced by her recent trip to Italy
and the 1950's Italian still-lifes she was exposed to, Coulis
has created five paintings that boast pattern, a spirited pallet,
strong composition and blocks of color. Within the sphere of still
lifes with a traditional focus on flowers and fruits this series
excites original interest. Its dismissal of standard approaches
to painting and blending produce a quality specific to Coulis
paintings, and that paired with the bold patterning and repetition
account for an energized aesthetic, almost playful. Coulis describes
it, "I am contemplating some formal games of painting." |
