Radcliffe Bailey
About the Artist

At thirty-eight years of age, Radcliffe Bailey has already created an exceptional body of work. The artist works by patterning together vintage photographs, objects he collects, and painted words and maps in a multi-layered narrative which explores the both history of African Americans, as well as Bailey's own personal history and influences. These elements are held together by his mastery of formal balance, rhythm and vivid color. His more recent work has progressed into the realm of sculpture and site-specific installations.

One of his greatest influences has been jazz music, and his mixed media paintings embody the spatial and environmental qualities of music. The artist has himself made the analogy, "I would draw comparisons to a jazz musician's search for a certain sound, riff or rhythm, through acts of improvisation."
