PRESS RELEASE
CARTER KUSTERA
FABULOUS ANGER
December 5, 2003 - January 10, 2004
Opening Reception and Artist Talk: Friday, December 5, 2003 / 6 - 8 PM
Solomon Projects is pleased to present "Fabulous Anger," a new series of
gouache and watercolor drawings by New York-based conceptual artist, Carter
Kustera. The exhibition will be on view from December 5, 2003 through
January 10, 2004. Kustera will speak about his work during the opening on
Friday, December 5 from 6 - 8 PM.
At once poignant and witty, "Fabulous Anger" is a provocative body of work
that explores the commodification of violence. Combining image and text in
a format familiar to advertising --
the fashion layout -- Kustera takes a critical look at the way violence is
presented through the media. "As a contemporary society we have become so
accustomed and numbed to witnessing violence and social deviations that it
has become a part of our everyday experience," states the artist, and
through his politicization of the fashion layout, Kustera questions our
threshold for its acceptable presentation.
Kustera's work has been selected for many influential international
exhibitions including the 1993 and 1997 Venice Biennales; nationally he has
shown at the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; P.S. 1, Long Island City, NY;
and the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, Greensboro, NC. He is the recipient of
several prestigious awards, notably a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant and
the J.M. Kohler Arts Center and Kohler Company Arts in Industry Program
residency. His work can be found in many important public and private
collections including: The Progressive Corporation, Mayfield Village, OH;
Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH; Robert J.Shiffler
collection; and Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.
Additionally, the Progressive Corporation chose Kustera to design their
ground-breaking 1994 Annual Report, which was subsequently awarded The Black
Book's "Best Illustration Award" for an annual report. Kustera also was
commissioned to create a computer animation project for the stage show of
U2's 1997 World Tour, Pop Mart.
"Fabulous Anger" is Kustera's second solo exhibition with Solomon Projects.
